Shin-Budo Kai
Warren is Chief Instructor of New York City Shin-Budo. He started his practice of aikido in 1977 with Shizuo Imaizumi Sensei and has continued to do so until Imaizumi sensei’s retirement in 2022. Warren received the rank of Nanadan (7th dan) from Imaizumi Sensei in 2020. Warren endeavors to follow one of Imaizumi Sensei’s core teachings that every time we practice aikido we should do so with a beginner’s mind; that is, concentrate on fundamentals – the “how” and “what” of aikido techniques as they derive from basic principles.
Bob started Aikido in 1980 with the Kansas Ki-Society under the auspices of Kashiwaya Sensei in Boulder, CO. In 1982, he began training with Terry Pierce Sensei at the New Jersey Ki Society, achieving the rank of Shodan and Assistant Ki-Lecturer. At that time, he also began training with Imaizumi Sensei at the New York Ki Society. He continued his training at both dojos until 1988 when Imaizumi Sensei formally established the Shin-Budo Kai organization. Bob has trained exclusively with Imaizumi Sensei since that time. He achieved the rank of Rokudan (6th dan) in 2013.

Shin-Budo Kai
Ralph is Chief Instructor of Albuquerque Shin-Budo Kai. A student of Imaizumi Sensei since 1994, he has been active in Aikido for over 30 years. He is the editor and principal author of The Aikido of Shin-Budo Kai, A Guide to Principles and Practice. He also trains regularly in Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo. Ralph was promoted to Rokudan by Imaizumi Sensei in 2022.
Andrew Bordwin, 5th Dan
Andrew Bordwin began training under Imaizumi Sensei And Donna Carlson Sensei at 416 West 14th Street dojo in November 1990. It became clear almost immediately that he’d found his home, and he has remained committed to Shin-Budo Kai and Imaizumi sensei ever since.
Bordwin currently trains in Shinto Muso-ryu jo as well, and traces his interest in weapons and koryu (traditional Japanese weapons styles) — and his familiarity with kata-based training — directly to Imaizumi sensei’s rigorous curriculum.
Bordwin lives with his wife Gaby in Hastings-on-Hudson NY and continues to work as a photographer, filmmaker and artist. He currently holds godan in SBK Aikido, and Oku iri-sho in Shinto Muso-ryu.

Mike Chaney, 4th Dan

Shin-Budo Kai
Mike is Chief Instructor of North Texas Shin-Budo Kai. His aikido training began in Austin, TX in 1978 and he first encountered Imaizumi Sensei at a seminar in 1979. Thereafter, Mike relocated to NYC and trained directly under Imaizumi Sensei from 1981 to 1988. After several years of traveling and living abroad, Mike returned to Texas, settling in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and eventually establishing an SBK dojo there.
Mark Winkworth, 6th Dan

Shin-Budo Kai
Mark is the Chief Instructor at Durango Shin Budo Kai in Durango, Colorado. He began studying Shin Budo Kai aikido under Wade Ishimoto Sensei in Albuquerque in 1993 and attained the rank of Shodan in 1998. Mark moved to Colorado in 2000 and helped to start Durango Shin Budo Kai in 2002 where he has been teaching ever since. He received the rank of Rokudan (6th dan) in 2025.
